UPS on Tuesday named Bala Subramanian as its Chief Digital and Technology Officer, a new role at the logistics giant that combines IT and engineering responsibilities with a remit to increase organizational agility and build digital fluency across the company.

He begins July 18 and will be part of the company’s Executive Leadership Team, reporting to CEO Carol Tomé.

Subramanian’s appointment follows the departure of longtime UPS technology leader Juan Perez, who spent more than 30 years at the company, most recently as Chief Information and Engineering Officer. Perez recently took on the CIO role at Salesforce.

At UPS, Subramanian will oversee IT technical support services, application development, information security, and industrial engineering. That includes the company’s Advanced Technology Group, which manages automation projects, a drone airline and other autonomous initiatives, and a data science team focused on artificial intelligence and machine learning opportunities.

The role also includes a digital component that will bring Subramanian closer to the company’s Chief Marketing Officer and other C-suite peers as UPS pursues its digital transformation efforts and creates more technology-led experiences for customers and team members. He has been tasked with building digital fluency across UPS and “will supercharge agility, speed and data as a core competency for the company,” a UPS spokesperson said in an email.

Subramanian most recently served as Chief Digital Officer at AT&T, where he led an employee and customer experience transformation and created a more agile and data-driven approach to working. Prior to AT&T, he was Chief Digital Officer at Best Buy, where he helped lead the company’s turnaround and oversaw technology, product development and operations across the company’s e-commerce portfolio. He is a member of the board of directors for Cars.com and Dutch multinational retailer Ahold Delhaize.

“Bala will supercharge our digital transformation at UPS, driving new competitive advantages for our customers and partners,” Tomé said in a statement. “He will be laser focused on making it easier to do business with UPS, while giving our employees new tools to unleash even more innovation for our customers.”
