Updating University Infrastructure and Technology
The Cal State Fullerton community will notice university-wide infrastructure updates during the 2022-23 school year. Providing a safe, clean and inviting campus is essential for effective teaching and student learning as the university’s infrastructure modernizes to fit rapidly changing times.
Current University Infrastructure Changes in Progress
Olympic-Sized Competition Pool
A 50-meter-long competition pool is being constructed east of the Kinesiology and Health Science building, replacing the existing pool. With new pump equipment, chemical feeders for enhanced cleaning, modern heating equipment, more lighting, and an adjustable bulkhead for adjusted diving, this project will address the structural deficiencies of existing pools. Construction will be completed by the end of March 2022.
McCarthy Hall Renovations
The exciting project to update the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics McCarthy Hall‘s second floor will modernize the new student collaboration areas and comfortable learning spaces. It will also add over 13,000 square feet of additional lecture and classroom space. The building will also feature elevator reliability improvements and new landscaping with outdoor furniture to improve the student experience. The second floor renovation will be ready for occupation in fall 2022.
Student Housing Additions
A new housing community is being constructed in what was formerly Parking Lot E. The six-story, suite-style complex will be housing 600 sophomore and junior students. The 182,000-square-foot complex will include a student lounge, multipurpose room, campus safety office, laundry room, meeting rooms, and dedicated workspaces. This ensures that CSUF meets the growing demands for a safe and modern living environment. The student housing will bring the on-campus total housing capacity to 2,200 students. The building is expected to take occupancy in fall 2022.
Energy Efficient Central Plant Boiler Installation
CSUF is finishing its final phase of installing electric boilers that support heating and cooling systems for all campus buildings. By shifting to electric sources, the CSUF power plant will create an energy-efficient campus and improve energy consumption year-round. The installation is expected to be complete in June 2022.
Visual Arts Complex Modernization
At the beginning of June 2022, the Department of Visual Arts will renovate Buildings E, and replace Buildings D and F, constructed in 1969. The buildings will have new technology and up-to-date spaces. Two new buildings — G and H — will be added to the complex. They will provide an improved learning environment for students with enhanced programs and events for art galleries. The project is expected to be complete in December 2024.
Ongoing Campus Projects
Pedestrian Bridge
A proposed bridge will connect the College Park building to the main campus. The pedestrian bridge will provide a safer route for students, staff and faculty when crossing Nutwood Avenue. It has received $6 million in funding and is expected to help reduce accidents, improve traffic flow, and encourage walking and biking.
Science Laboratory Replacement Building and Center for Leadership Building
To expand the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, a new three-to-four-story science building south of Dan Black Hall will be built. The 80,000 square-foot building will house McCarthy Hall labs, lab support and a lecture room. The Center for Leadership Building will add a three-story structure northeast of the College of Business and Economics Building. It will enhance leadership programs, student learning environments and include modern amenities.
Engineering and Computer Science Expansion and Renovation
As Titans move toward a technologically advanced world, CSUF will renovate and replace part of the College of Engineering and Computer Science building. The multiphased construction project will remove the southside ECS buildings and add a four-story engineering building with updated labs, classrooms, offices, shops and student spaces. The remaining towers will be renovated to match the new construction.
