A series of bizarre posts were sent from the force's account, which has around 1.2m followers. The strange posts began late on Friday night, leaving many Twitter users in shock at the content of the tweets. One said: “What are you gonna do phone the police?”

Another said: “gcv & xe3 xx”.

The police said it was currently working hard to rectify the issue before urging users to “ignore tweets until we verify its back under official control”.

So far, it is unknown how exactly the hackers managed to access the UK’s biggest police force’s account.

It is also not known how many people were involved in the incident.

As well as the tweets, the Metropolitan Police’s website was targeted.

A series of press releases with letters and words were created.

Supt Roy Smith, from the Metropolitan Police, wrote on Twitter: “We are aware that the @metpoliceuk has been subject to unauthorised access and our media team are working hard to delete the messages and ensure the security of the account.

“Please ignore any Tweets until we verify that it is back under official control.”

Twitter users reacted to the posts with dismay.

One wrote: “All the police are on the streets, no one to guard the PC.”

Another said: “You hack the Met and this is the best you can do?”

A third added: “This has hack written all over it…”
