In India it is primarily women who compromise careers in order to care for their husbands and families. Add to that the fact that many of these women are uneducated or even illiterate and it ups the vulnerability stakes considerably. Should the unthinkable happen and their husbands - usually the sole breadwinner of the family - pass away, these women and their children are often left destitute and defenceless. This story explores the impact and importance of life insurance in these challenging scenarios and considers how a cultural shift toward the uptake of this critical safety net can reduce the vulnerability of the poor and build a more resilient society.
Reducing vulnerability and improving opportunities can be approached from many angles, and with ninety percent of India's 1.2 billion-strong population not able to access to a computer, that equates to a staggering amount of untapped potential and the opportunity for significant technological development to take place. Digital India is a government launched programme to transform India into a digitally empowered society. With the help of private sector partnerships, significant progress is being made to create a digital revolution under the youth of India; introducing technology into homes, schools and communities and providing a sustainable boost to their productive futures.
