Technics and Civilization-7 : Technological Determinism

iSpeech.org

A discussion between Dr. Layne Hartsell and philosopher of technology, Dr. Ryan Maboloc

One of the major topics today, and social concerns, is technological determinism and its effects on societies and individuals. In this discussion, Ryan Maboloc responds with his ideas on current topics in the philosophy of technology and how we are affected by rapid technological changes, particularly digital systems that we use in smartphones and social media.

Questions include “What is the contextualization of technology?” and what is meant by “People-centered technology?”

Maboloc takes a technologically neutral position and at times one that is for technology according to the circumstances – hence, people-centric. When technology is highly expensive and unnecessary in a particular society, he takes a negative view of the particular technology. While positive overall, Maboloc is particularly critical of social media use. He argues for people-centered technology or technology that is emancipative for human beings rather than wasteful technologies and/or deterministic technology that we are all too aware of in social media today.

Neither he, nor I, think was are close to a better society based on the above considerations.
