Speed limiting technology to be fitted to every new car from 2022

From next year all new cars will be required to have speed-limiting software to help prevent drivers from exceeding the limit.

The software, Intelligent Speed Assistance, will be mandatory for all new cars in the EU and UK.

The technology uses either a video or GPS-linked system to detect speed signs, and alerts the driver when they are exceeding the limit.

Cars will be fitted with the new technology

The system does not stop the driver from reaching higher speeds completely nor does it implement the brakes, instead it issues a series of alerts.

According to Confused.com, if the driver does not reduce their speed the vehicle eventually reduces power to the engine causing it to naturally slow down.

Will old cars need to get the system?

At the moment only new cars will be required to have this speed limiting technology.

There are no requirements for motorists to be forced to invest in installing the system on the old vehicles.

What are the benefits?

The new technology can be very beneficial to all those on the roads, and could even be life-saving.

According to Money.com, the technology could also lead to lower insurance premiums, while fuel efficiency may also improve.

For drivers who struggle to stick to the speed limit, they could also save themselves from lots of fines with the assistance of the technology.
