WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (April 20, 2022) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team was swept by FDU-Florham at home on Wednesday, April 20. The Ducks fell 15-12 in game one and 5-4 in game two in the MAC Freedom doubleheader.

Senior Meg Halloran led Stevens with five hits, going a combined 5 for 8 across both games. Fifth-year Siobhan Cottell led the Ducks with three RBI and went a combined 2 for 6 with a home run. Stevens fell to 9-13 overall and 5-3 in conference play with the loss.

The Devils were led by first-year Rachel Reiter who went a combined 4 for 8 with five RBI. She had two doubles and a home run on the day. Sophomore Kacie Centineo and senior Colleen Conway each contributed four RBI as well. FDU improved to 10-10 overall and 6-4 in conference play with the pair of victories.

Game one ramped up quickly. The Ducks fell behind early when Reiter homered in the first for FDU and then Stevens quickly tied it up when sophomore Julia Baber advanced on a throw to score. The Devils then scored six runs in the second. The inning was fueled by a three RBI double from Reiter and the score was 7-1. After FDU scored three more runs in the top of the fourth, Stevens trailed 10-1.

The Ducks did not quit and Stevens' bats erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the fourth. Five different Ducks notched an RBI and the score was 10-9. Unfortunately, the comeback effort fell short as FDU added five more runs in the fifth to get to 15 runs and won by a score of 15-12. Junior Erin Kreis (5-6) was credited with the loss and senior Ciara Hoffman (7-6) secured the win for FDU.

The second game started with Stevens taking a 3-0 advantage in the first three innings. Graduate student Amanda Delorme and first-year Emma Ruiz each picked up an RBI. The score remained 3-0 until the final inning when FDU added five runs to take a 5-3 lead in the top of the seventh. Stevens attempted to mount a comeback in the second half of the inning, but it was not enough and the Ducks fell 5-4.

First-year Kaitlin Smith (4-6) picked up the loss for Stevens and Hoffman earned a save for the Devils.

Up Next: The Ducks return to action on Saturday, April 23. Stevens hosts Misericordia in a home doubleheader at Waterfront Park in Weehawken, N.J.
