Sir Kenneth Warren, who has died aged 92, was a clubbable Conservative MP, a devoted supporter of Margaret Thatcher – and the only member of the team who engineered her capture of the Tory leadership never to serve on her front bench.

An aeronautical engineer, Ken Warren had a canny political brain. But his conviviality, his irrepressible sense of humour and an elastic-faced demeanour – which made him look inebriated even when stone cold sober – led to his talents being underrated. Yet he came into his own in later years as a shrewd and fearless chairman of the Trade and Industry Select Committee.
