S-M-mess

Powered by iSpeech

Imagine that your domestic waste is your child, that you could empathize with it, and that it could return back home to you. Using SMS technology, S-M-mess sought to renegotiate the relationship between people and their waste.
The project came about as a way of addressing waste management concerns in Indian households by relating to people information about their waste once it has left their homes. S-M-mess borders between art, tactical media, design research and activism, and it brings to the front questions about security and surveillance, privacy, legality, ethics, waste relations, environmental concerns and broadcasting mediums. More importantly it raises questions about SMS technology, its uses as a medium of broadcasting, the legal concerns surrounding the use of SMS technology and how content can determine its perception as a form of communication.
This 30 minute video documentation of the month long project, narrates not only the course of the project, but also addresses the issues mentioned above, and perhaps successfully questions the use of SMS as a New Media Possibility.
