ATLANTA — Now a few weeks into the second semester, students at Atlanta Public Schools are being greeted with new safety technology when they walk in the door.

Channel 2′s Steve Gehlbach visited Maynard Jackson High School this week to see how this technology works to keep schools safe.

Officials say the new EVOLV system is more efficient and more targeted. The new system was rolled out at Maynard Jackson before students went on their winter break, the new technology is less invasive.

“Taking everything out of pockets, having your bag searched, it takes time. The line would grow longer if the temperature was hot or cold,” Maynard Jackson Principal Adam Dancer said.

So far, students like this system more than the previous one.

“Last year, a lot of times it would get backed up and would kind o be terrible to be honest in the winter, because sometimes we would be out there waiting in line for 10 minutes, and now we can kind of get through immediately,” Ayden Leibert, a MHS senior said.

APS chief of police Chief Ronald Applin says it is overall better technology and screening and thinks it will catch more items.

“We always look at ways to make things safer, so this is one of many things we are going to do to make the district as safe as possible,” Applin said.

This district used about $2.5 million from CARES act funding to upgrade the screening at all district middle schools and high schools to the same system used in schools around the nation, amusement parks like Six Flags and even Mercedes-Benz Stadium in downtown Atlanta.

“I would definitely say I feel safer because this is the same safety system when we go to Falcons games,” Leibert said.

In a few weeks, this exact same security system will be in place at district football fields and stadiums.
