Not Entitled

TTS

Animated self-portraits which have been produced with zero budget; I used my own body as a live sculpture to talk about destitution, displacement, vulnerability, identity, gender, and history. The use of the white sheet that covers most of the body makes a direct reference to the Ancient Greek sculpture but here its role is not to enhance and glorify a healthy and beautiful body but to cover the shame of being not entitled to any of the life’s resources. Instead of the classic drapes, a cheap sheet that has not been ironed serves as the only means that provides shelter, leaving occasionally part of the naked body visible, and thus exposing its vulnerability.

The poor quality of the photographs, the absence of professional lighting, the shadowy background and the fleshy, rotten-like colours are “anti-techniques” either employed, either found as natural circumstances to reflect and express the idea of destitution and desperation in flesh.

Not Entitled is part of the project Anorexineia which started in 2011 with a series of wax sculptures where anorexia, female identity and the Greek financial crisis were linked together. With Not Entitled I want to take a step further towards a more personal approach to politics and gender identity. Using my own body as a woman artist and displaying/covering it on a plinth nowadays, I see it as a desperate gesture to communicate how desperate and vulnerable I was feeling about me and my country.
