Niles Blotter: Jailed Man ‘Made A Sleeping Bag’

Domestic Battery Charged

Skylar B. Lay, 20, of the 4400 block of Franklin Avenue in Western Springs, was charged with domestic battery at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 20. She allegedly scratched a man on the face, neck, and arms during an argument in a parking lot in the 8800 block of W. Dempster Street. She also allegedly threw a soft drink and an open bottle of nail polish at the man.

Damage Charged

Hunter L. Walters, 20, of the 8400 block of Perry Road in Atlas, MI, was charged with criminal damage to property at 7:31 a.m. Wednesday, July 24. He was being held in the Niles police lockup, 7000 W. Touhy Ave., during an assist with Park Ridge police. While in the cell, he allegedly tore open the mattress and officers found him sleeping inside of it. When asked what happened, he allegedly replied, “I made a sleeping bag.”

Scam Reported

A resident told police he received a call at 11:23 a.m. Wednesday, July 24 and was told that he had paid for computer security software for $394 and if he wanted a refund that he needed to fill in information on his computer. After following the instructions, he discovered that more than $144,000 had been taken from his bank accounts. The caller then replaced $8,500 into the account and instructed him to send $8,000 in cash inside a book to an address in California. The resident did and is now following up with fraud investigators from his bank.

Drug Charges

A 21-year-old man from the 6200 block of Forest Glen Avenue in Chicago, was charged with possession of cannabis at 1:55 p.m. Saturday, July 20. He was the passenger in a vehicle stopped in the 9000 block of N. Greenwood Avenue. He allegedly had a plastic bag containing suspected marijuana. The driver of the car, the suspect’s 20-year-old brother from the same address, was cited for tinted windows. Police did not release the men’s names.

DUI Charges

Daniel R. Varella, 46, of the 4600 block of Keystone Avenue in Chicago, was charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol, blood alcohol content more than .08 percent, and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. Police apprehended him after an alleged traffic crash at Milwaukee Avenue and Oakton Street at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 20. He allegedly failed field sobriety tests and later recorded more than the legal limit on a breath test.

Alcohol Charges

A 51-year-old man from the 300 block of Lee Street in Des Plaines, was charged with public intoxication and cost of emergency services at 5:56 p.m. Friday, July 19. He was allegedly drinking wine inside Jewel/Osco, 8730 W. Dempster St. He was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge for treatment. Police did not release the man’s name.

A 37-year-old man from the 300 block of Oak Street in Des Plaines, was charged with public intoxication and cost of emergency services. He was found lying on the ground in a parking lot in the 8800 block of W. Dempster Street at 2:40 a.m. Sunday, July 21. He was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge for treatment. Police did not release the man’s name.

Retail Theft Charged

A 52-year-old woman from the 7000 block of Sioux Avenue in Chicago, was charged with retail theft at Walmart, 5630 W. Touhy Ave. She was stopped at 4:29 p.m. Friday, July 19 after she allegedly tried to leave without paying for items valued at a total of $31.36. Police did not release the woman’s name.

Shongwut Chinosornvatana, 62, of the 3100 block of Church Street in Des Plaines, was charged with retail theft and tampering with an anti-theft detection device. He was taken into custody at Target, 6150 W. Touhy Ave., at 5:10 p.m. Friday, July 19, after he allegedly removed a theft detection shield from a vacuum cleaner and tried to leave without paying for the unit.

A 58-year-old woman from the 3800 block of W. Kollman Way in Chicago, and her daughter, a 31-year-old woman from the 3000 block of Knox Avenue in Chicago, were charged with petite theft at 1:55 p.m. Saturday, July 20. They were stopped at Walmart, 5630 W. Touhy Ave., after they allegedly tried to leave without paying for items valued at a total of $274.41. Police did not release the women’s names.

A 22-year-old man from the 3800 block of W. George Street in Chicago, was charged with retail theft at Walmart, 5630 W. Touhy Ave. He was taken into custody at 5:42 p.m. Sunday, July 21 after he allegedly tried to leave without paying for several items he had hidden in his pants. Police did not release the man’s name.

Reginald W. Smith, 67, of the 7400 block of S. Kingston Street in Chicago, was charged with retail theft at 4:14 p.m. Monday, July 22. He was stopped at Walmart, 5630 W. Touhy Ave., after he allegedly tried to leave without paying for clothing valued at a total of $102.89.





Azahni M. Ellis, 26, of the 1000 block of W. Greenfield Road in Milwaukee, WI, was charged with retail theft and use or possession of a theft detection device at 5:39 p.m. Wednesday, July 24. She allegedly tried to leave Target in Golf Mill Mall without paying for liquor and garbage bags valued at a total of $170.95. Employees struggled with her in the vestibule of the store and she fled in a black Kia Forte. Officers recovered video surveillance footage of the incident. Police stopped her in the 9100 block of Maryland Avenue and located other bottles of liquor in her vehicle with anti-theft devices still on them. She was also served an outstanding warrant from DuPage County for failure to appear.

Retail Theft Reported

An unknown woman took clothing from Kohl’s Department Store in Golf Mill Mall at 5:57 p.m. Saturday, July 20. A security guard tried to stop her in the parking lot but the woman screamed and ran to her vehicle. The guard was able to take pictures of her vehicle as she fled.

An unknown man took tools valued at a total of $900 from Home Depot, 901 Civic Center Dr., at 1:16 p.m. Monday, July 22. Security for the store saw the man take items two times and employees were able to stop him on his third attempted theft. They recovered the items he took on that trip but the man fled and escaped in a tan Nissan.

An unknown man took a bottle of liquor from Target in Golf Mill Mall at 9:22 p.m. Wednesday, July 24. Officers recovered video surveillance footage of the incident. Employees told police the same man has taken liquor on several occasions since August 2018.

Counterfeit Bills

An unknown man purchased items at Walgreens Drug Store, 8001 N. Milwaukee Ave., with five counterfeit $20 bills. The incident occurred at 6:58 p.m. Saturday, July 20.

Driving Charges

Mirgen Didani, 46, of the 2700 block of 73rd Avenue in Elmwood Park, was charged with driving with a suspended driver’s license and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident at 4:55 p.m. Friday, July 19. She was apprehended after an alleged traffic crash in the 9400 block of N. Milwaukee Avenue.

Ivica Ljubic, 26, of the 6900 block of N. Caldwell Avenue in Chicago, was charged with driving with a suspended driver’s license. He was pulled over in the 7000 block of Caldwell Avenue for allegedly driving at 78 mph in a 35 mph zone at 10:24 p.m. Friday, July 19. Ljubic allegedly told the officer he thought he was only driving at 60 mph. Police did not state if any additional tickets were given to him.

Israel Martinez-Montes, 39, of the 100 block of Charabanc Lane in Wheeling, was charged with no valid driver’s license at 12:05 a.m. Sunday, July 21. He was pulled over in the 8600 block of N. Milwaukee Avenue for allegedly having tinted windows. Police did not state if any additional tickets were given to him.

Kristian G. Jarvis, 26, of the 700 block of Edgemont Lane in Park Ridge, was charged with speeding and no proof of insurance. Police stopped him in the 6600 block of W. Howard Street at 1:40 a.m. Sunday, July 21 for allegedly driving at 78 mph in a 35 mph zone.

Cindy C. Flores, 32, of the 2600 block of Elizabeth Avenue in Zion, was charged with driving with a suspended driver’s license, no proof of insurance, and improper lane usage. An officer pulled her over in the 9100 block of W. Golf Road at 4:49 a.m. Sunday, July 21 for allegedly swerving out of her lane. Flores allegedly told the officer she was trying to pick up her cellular telephone that had dropped to the floor of the vehicle.

Daria Zakhaova, 30, of the 6000 block of W. Grace Street in Chicago, was charged with no valid driver’s license and no headlights when required. She was stopped at N. Milwaukee Avenue and W. Monroe Street at 10:14 p.m. Tuesday, July 23 for the alleged lighting violation.

An 18-year-old Chicago man was charged with speeding at 1:34 a.m. Wednesday, July 24. Police pulled him over in the 8500 block of Milwaukee Avenue for allegedly driving at 63 mph in a 35 mph zone.

Burglary Reported

A window was broken and tools valued at a total of $1,100 were taken from a van in the 9200 block of N. Callero Drive between 6 p.m. Monday, July 22 and 5 a.m. Tuesday, July 23.

Vandalism Report

Two windows were broken at Agit Bar and Grill, 9098 W. Golf Rd., at about 5:10 a.m. Tuesday, July 2. Officers recovered video surveillance footage of the incident.
