Midland’s SPACE offers leading-edge technology to feds

SPACE Inc. is the first WBENC certified, women-owned small business approved by the General Services Administration to apply SPACE Facility Armor, an antimicrobial treatment, to protect government workers in federal offices.

The technology was created by the Dow Corning Corporation 30 years ago for healthcare environments, but SPACE has adapted it to office settings as a specific response to COVID-19. An application lasts up to 30 months.

“As soon as the GSA (General Services Administration) expressed interest in expediting preventative solutions to address COVID-19, our team got right to work determining how we could respond to the nationwide need,” said Paddy Hobohm, SPACE president. “We were confident this unique combination of eco-friendly science and technology, can meet the challenges created by the pandemic.”

SPACE Facility Armor Program combines a CDC and EPA N-list approved, hospital-grade disinfectant with an electrostatically charged application to prohibit the growth of mold, mildew, bacteria, and viruses on furniture, HVAC, critical-touch surfaces and food areas in the built environment for up to 30 months.

SPACE is also uniquely positioned to tackle the excess office inventory created by the pandemic, thanks to GSA approval of its sustainable upcycling program, SPACE Anew. SPACE can upcycle existing office furniture at 30-50% less cost, reconfiguring it into flexible, hybrid workspaces with the goal of placing zero percent of furniture in a landfill. It is estimated that the office furniture industry creates nine million tons of waste annually.

“We saw a need for a sustainable solution to office furniture waste back in 2010, when we launched SPACE Anew,” Hobohm said. “With increasing numbers of federal employees working at home and on flex schedules, this bold but simple idea is needed now more than ever.”

Keeping workers safe was top of mind last spring, when SPACE East team members — Zaneta Puller, (government sales support) and Sahar Pena (director of business development) — attended a GSA small business town hall meeting and learned of the need for innovative solutions in federal workplaces.

“SPACE is mission-focused on keeping workers safe and protecting the environment,” said Hobohm. “Our SPACE Anew and SPACE Facility Armor solutions put us at the forefront of serving the federal government with those goals in mind.”

“As the government determines how to safely bring employees back into the office, SPACE is ready to provide the sustainable, safe, and affordable services required,” Hobohm said.

Since first winning approval to provide furniture installation and design solutions to federal government offices in 2004, SPACE has completed more than 1000 federal projects across the country.

SPACE is hosting a free, 30-minute, educational webinar for anyone interested in learning more about the GSA approved, COVID response technologies at 9 a.m. March 16. Register online at https://spaceinc.net/staysafeGSA/
