HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 2, 2021)  – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team was unable to overcome a sluggish start in falling to DeSales University 2-0 Saturday at the DeBaun Athletic Complex. The match marked the MAC Freedom opener for both sides.

With the victory, DeSales evened its record at 5-5 and moved to 1-0 in league play, while Stevens dropped its second straight in falling to 5-4-1 and to 0-1 in MAC Freedom competition.

DeSales' Dimeji Oyinkolade broke through in the fourth minute. A foul led to a free for DeSales in the middle of the attacking third. The Bulldogs' Eric Clouse played a service into the 18, but the ball was played out of immediate danger. Oyinkolade collected the loose ball, turned and pushed a shot into the lower-right corner of the goal for his ninth marker of the season.

DeSales would double its lead in the 38th minute when Caden Sundermann headed home a Clouse service after DeSales earned consecutive corners after an Aedan Boriotti save.

The two-goal cushion would be enough for Nathan Hatzfield, who made five saves to preserve the clean sheet. Boriotti took the loss for Stevens.

Following the intermission, the Ducks applied heavy pressure in an attempt to even the match. Stevens outshot DeSales 13-2 over the final 45 minutes, but were unable to solve Hatzfield.

Turning Point

  • With the Ducks applying heavy pressure in the attacking third, Hatzfield robbed graduate student Cristiano Hocken in the 80th minute. Hocken and senior Adam Silva executed a perfect give and go, with Hocken moving through the 18. Hocken laced a stinging shot that Hatzfield was able to push out of the air.

Inside the Numbers

  • Stevens finished with a 17-6 advantage in shots and a 5-3 margin in shots on target.
  • The Ducks matched a season high with 10 corners, while DeSales finished with five. After each side earned four in the first half, Stevens out-earned DeSAles 6-1 in the second half.
  • Each side committed nine fouls.

From the Sidelines - Head Coach Dale Jordan

  • "Very disappointing result. We never really got started and a 2-0 deficit is very hard to overcome in conference play."
  • "In the second half, we showed some fight, but alas, it was not enough. We have to dust ourselves off and rebound for a difficult conference game on the road on Tuesday."
