Malware attacks on the rise in India: SonicWall report

Speech Synthesis

A global report by US cyber security solutions provider SonicWall has found an increase in the malware attacks in India in the first half of this year.

“While the overall global markets saw a reduction in malware attacks, India saw a 25% increase in attacks compared to the previous year,” said Country Manager India Debasish Mukherjee, sharing details of the SonicWall 2019 mid-year threat report.

“There is an interesting dichotomy with specific reference to India. The findings show 62% decline in ransomware, whereas [there has been] 25% increase in malware attacks. As India goes more digital, unknown cyber attacks will increase manifold,” he said at a media interaction here on Tuesday.

SonicWall Cyber Threat Report is based on real-world data from more than one million international security sensors in over 200 countries. A release on the report said SonicWall haf registered 2.4 million encrypted attacks, almost eclipsing the 2018 full-year total in half the time.

Globally, new data found an escalation in ransomware-as-a-service, open-source malware kits and cryptojacking used by cyber criminals. Such reports highlighted how important it was for every enterprise to realise that cyber threats were a reality, said Mr. Mukherjee said.

Expansion on cards

SonicWall, which in India has a strong research and development presence, is evaluating various expansion options. The company planned to either expand its existing R&D centre in Bengaluru where it currently employed 600 people. A tech support centre, experiential centres and sales office were also on cards.

The proposed expansion comes in the backdrop of the growing importance of India as a market for the company, he said, adding tht headcount at the Bengaluru facility would be increased to 700 this year.

Mr. Mukherjee said SonicWall would in the next few months get into consumer products through telecom service providers.
