Maine medical center alerts patients of data breach
Bangor, Maine-based Penobscot Community Health Care mailed letters to an unknown number of patients about a data breach at one of the medical center's third-party vendors, according to Bangor Daily News.
The American Medical Collection Agency reported that an unauthorized person gained access to its systems between August 2018 and March. The billing collections vendor notified Penobscot Community Health Care in May.
Patients' names, dates of birth, referring medical providers and other medical information was stored on AMCA's systems. No patient health records, diagnosis or treatment information was affected.
Penobscot Community Health Care has stopped doing business with AMCA. The medical center is working to secure all of the data that may have been on the compromised systems.
"The health and safety of our patients is our top priority, and that includes the safety of our patient data," Lori Dwyer, president and CEO of Penobscot Community Health Care told Bangor Daily News. "Our own internal data security system is strong, and was not affected by AMCA's incident. PCHC is absolutely committed to patient safety and privacy, and we are here to assist our patients through this."
