Rep. Tom Kean Jr. (R-Westfield) announced yesterday that he has been appointed to a seat on the House Science, Space, & Technology Committee, which has jurisdiction over non-defense-related research and development as well as agencies like NASA.

“New Jersey is home to some of the best researchers, innovators, and entrepreneurs in the world,” Kean said in a statement. “Through these industries we are building high efficiency microgrids, discovering cures to disease, and expanding our telecommunications networks to connect people like never before. I am looking forward to serving on the Science, Space, and Technology Committee to be a leader in supporting critical industry missions.”

Rep. Frank Lucas (R-Oklahoma), the new chairman of the committee, said that he was pleased to have Kean on the committee.

“I’m happy to welcome Rep. Kean to the House Science Committee,” Lucas said. “He has a strong understanding of energy and environmental policy and I believe he’ll be an important asset as we work to make American energy cleaner, more affordable, and more secure. I look forward to working with him.”

Kean, a freshman Republican who defeated former Rep. Tom Malinowski (D-Ringoes) last fall in New Jersey’s closest House race, had previously announced two other committee assignments: the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Transportation & Infrastructure Committee, both of which Malinowski once served on.
