Indiana University-housed cybersecurity institution OmniSOC has merged with ResearchSOC, a security operations center supported by the National Science Foundation. OmniSOC, which launched in 2018, provides 24/7 network security monitoring for Big Ten Academic Alliance schools.

The universities pooled resources to save money and share benefits to protect research data shared among partner schools.

The Research Security Operations Center (ResearchSOC) was also created in 2018 to provide cybersecurity for facilities that conduct research for the NSF. IU is also a member of ResearchSOC.

“The goal of OmniSOC is to coordinate across member institutions, reducing the time from first awareness of a cybersecurity threat anywhere to mitigation everywhere,” said Von Welch, executive director of OmniSOC and principal investigator for ResearchSOC. “The ResearchSOC name will continue to persist, describing a combination of OmniSOC’s 24/7 monitoring, combined with vulnerability identification, decoy computers, dedicated project expertise, and other services to make NSF facilities resilient to cyberattacks and capable of supporting trustworthy, productive research.
