Amsterdam, July 20, 2022 – Technology and Health Care would like to announce that co-Editor-in-Chief Peter Niederer, PhD, Professor Emeritus, ETH, Zurich, Switzerland, has decided to step down from this position after successfully leading the journal for 29 years. Publisher IOS Press wishes to honor his many contributions to the publication and the field in general.

Prof. em. Peter Niederer launched Technology and Health Care in 1993 to establish a rigorous peer-reviewed journal exclusively dedicated to the overlapping areas of biomedical engineering and medicine. Right from the early days of this burgeoning discipline, the journal’s mission has been and remains to disseminate research on the application of novel biomedical technology in medical research and clinical practice. Globally recognized for supporting the principles of integrity, flexibility, collaboration, and innovation, the journal is designed to advance close cooperation among engineers, mathematicians, physicists, IT specialists on the one hand, and biomedical researchers, clinical practitioners, and deliverers of health care in general on the other. The journal has been published by IOS Press since 1998.

Prof. em. Dr. Peter Niederer received his degree in theoretical physics at the University of Zurich in 1967 and earned his doctorate in 1972 at the Institute of Mechanics at the ETH Zurich. Highlights of his distinguished career include serving as a scientific staff member at the newly founded Institute of Biomedical Technology, University of Zurich and the ETH Zurich, research engineer at the Biomedical Department of the General Motors Research Laboratories in Warren, Michigan (1973-1974), later returning to the Institute of Biomedical Engineering as a senior assistant.

Prof. em. Niederer’s scientific interests focus on the fields of biomechanics and medical optics with special emphasis on the biomechanics of the heart and circulatory system as well as trauma biomechanics. In 1980, he received the Götz Prize from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Zurich for his work on the theoretical and experimental simulation of automobile/pedestrian collisions. In the field of medical optics, he collaborated with industry relating to high-definition endoscopy.

“The cooperation with IOS Press has been most gratifying and uncomplicated through all the years. I express my sincere gratitude, in particular to Dr. Einar Fredriksson, founder and director of IOS Press, Journal Managers Marion Lilley and Axana Scherbeijn, as well as the entire staff of IOS Press,” commented Prof. em. Niederer.

“It is with great sadness that we say farewell to Peter, whose vision and tireless work on behalf of the journal have contributed so much to its growth and ongoing success. His constant dedication, enthusiasm, and collaborative spirit helped shape the journal,” said Dr. Fredriksson. “He will certainly be missed by the IOS Press family. At the same time, we would like to welcome Almir Badnjević.”

Almir Badnjević, PhD, Verlab Research Institute, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, has now taken on the role of co-Editor-in-Chief alongside Matthias Lahner, MD, Ruhr University Bochum, Hilden, Germany, who has served as co-Editor-in-Chief since 2018.

A biomedical engineer by training, Dr. Badnjević received his PhD in electrical engineering from the University of Zagreb, Croatia, in 2015, concentrating on the application of artificial intelligence in healthcare. He was one of the originators of the concepts of including measurement functionality in medical devices for a legal metrology framework and establishing measurement traceability in medical measurements. He is also professor in the field of general electronics and bioengineering at International Burch University Sarajevo, and in the field of health informatics at the University of Sarajevo.

“I am excited to start serving the Technology and Health Care community. Building on its 29-year history, the journal will continue to support the principles of openness, transparency, rigor, and reproducibility in everything we publish. I am committed to listening to our community to understand how we can best meet its needs and work to change scientific communication for the better,” stated Dr. Badnjević.

“On behalf of the Editorial Board, our authors, reviewers, and readers, we would like to thank our outgoing co-Editor-in Chief, Peter Niederer, who has worked tirelessly to successfully grow and develop the reputation of Technology and Health Care,” added Dr. Lahner and Dr. Badnjević.
