Interior’s Cybersecurity Failures Risk Agency Systems, IG Says

The Interior Department’s cybersecurity lapses leave the agency vulnerable to hacking, the agency’s Office of Inspector General said in a report published Friday.

The department’s password complexity requirements were insufficient to prevent unauthorized access to its systems and data, and the agency didn’t consistently implement multifactor authentication on its user accounts, the report says.

Dams and hydroelectric power plant operation in the West, oil and gas leasing, law enforcement in national parks and other public lands, offshore oil and gas safety oversight, and many more sensitive functions are all under the purview of the Interior Department.
