IIT Roorkee to get a new research centre for futuristic defence technology requirements

With the establishment of the Research Centre, IIT Roorkee will have improved prospects and avenues to address critical and futuristic defence technology requirements of the armed forces.

Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) has been approved for a new research center, keeping in line with India's technological upgradation and self-reliance in the defence sector.

As part of the facility at IIT Roorkee, a DRDO Industry Academia-Centre of Excellence (DIA-CoE) will be established. Defence Minister, Shri Rajnath Singh, has also indicated this at a seminar on Atmaanirbharta at DefExpo 2022, India, in Gandhinagar.





A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was recently signed between six IITs, including IIT Roorkee, and Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

As a result of the establishment of the Research Centre, IIT Roorkee will have a better chance of addressing critical and futuristic defence technology requirements of the armed forces. DRDO, Government of India, will provide financial assistance to the Facility.

KEY RESEARCH AREAS OF THE CENTRE INCLUDE:

  • Smart Infrastructure and Hardened Structures for Defence Applications
  • Energy Storage Devices
  • Landslide, Snow, and Avalanche Studies
  • Pulsed Laser and Specialty Fiber
  • Shock and Detonics
  • Thermal Management
