IAM, Macomb Mathematics Science Technology Center earn national acclaim – Macomb Daily
Macomb County has two schools at the head of the class in the annual U.S. News and World Report list of the best schools in the state of Michigan.
The International Academy of Macomb, located on the Chippewa Valley campus, was named the top high school in the state by the publication. It also ranks 24th nationally.
The ratings are based upon math and reading proficiency, underserved student performance, graduation rate, and college readiness.
“The US News and World Report ranking is a testament to the collaborative efforts of our students, staff and districts. This recognition makes our entire community proud and inspires us to continue to provide an outstanding educational experience,” said IAM principal Laura Strong.
The success of IAM, which enrolls students from around Macomb County, is a cooperative effort, Alesia Flye, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction/Chief Academic Officer, pointed out.
“We are extremely proud of The International Academy of Macomb’s consistent ranking as a top performing high school. The IAM is an example of the strong community support and collaboration among Macomb County School Districts. The staff and students work incredibly hard, and their efforts continuously result in 100% of IAM students moving on to post-secondary opportunities,” said Flye.
The Macomb Mathematics Science Technology Center, part of the Warren Consolidated School district, has been named the top middle school in the state of Michigan by U.S. News and World Report in its annual study. Scores and based upon reading and math efficiency.
A magnet school in WCS, the student population of Middle School Mathematics Science Technology Center is 80, and the school serves 6-8 grades. At the school, 98% of students scored at or above the proficient level for math, and 98% scored at or above that level for reading.
“I’m really amazed,” said Catherine Neuhoff, the director of MMSTC and special programs. “Given COVID-19 and everything that was going on, the students and staff still focused on teaching and learning. The kids pulled it through. The integrated curriculum has a lot to do with why they performed so high.”

• Eisenhower High School in Shelby Township, part of the Utica Community Schools, ranked No. 63.
• Stevenson High School in Sterling Heights, part of the Utica Community Schools, ranked No. 76.
• Henry Ford II High School in Sterling Heights, part of the Utica Community Schools, ranked No. 88.
• L’Anse Creuse High School North in Macomb Township, part of the L’Anse Creuse Public Schools, ranked No. 117.
• Dakota High School in Macomb Township, part of the Chippewa Valley Schools, ranked No. 119.
• Utica High School in Utica, part of the Utica Community Schools, ranked No. 140.
• Armada High School in Armada, part of the Armada Area Schools, ranked No. 144.
• Romeo High School in Romeo, part of the Romeo Community Schools, ranked No. 165.
Other Macomb County middle schools that ranked in the top 200 include:
• Malow Junior High School in Shelby Township, part of the Utica Community Schools, ranked No. 57.
• Heritage Junior High School in Sterling Heights, part of the Utica Community Schools, ranked No. 75.
• Richards Middle School in Fraser, part of the Fraser Public Schools, ranked No. 133.
• Jeannette Junior High School in Sterling Heights, part of the Utica Community Schools, ranked No. 148.
• Bemis Junior High School in Sterling Heights, part of the Utica Community Schools, ranked No. 149.
• Jefferson Middle School in St. Clair Shores, part of the Lakeview Public Schools, ranked No. 165.
• Shelby Junior High School in Shelby Township, part of the Utica Community Schools, ranked No. 193.
• And the Merrit Academy in New Haven ranked No. 200.
At the elementary school level, Messmore Elementary School in Sterling Heights, part of the Utica Community Schools district, is the top-ranked elementary school in Macomb County, according to U.S. News and World Report. Scores are based upon reading and math proficiency.
Messmore, a Montessori school, is ranked No. 42 in the state. At the school, 82% of students scored at or above the proficient level for math, and 77% scored at or above that level for reading.
Merrit Academy in New Haven ranked 107 on the list. At Merritt Academy, 56% of students scored at or above the proficient level for math, and 63% scored at or above that level for reading.
