FCC and Cox: 60 records breached, $595K in fines

Text to Speech

Data breaches can be costly - not just because of reputational loss, but because federal agencies will fine organizations that experience personal data loss.
Hi, and welcome to the CloudMask video blog!
{marker}Brian Krebs of KrebsOnSecurity reported that Cox Communications was fined this week for experiencing a data breach involving the public release of around 60 customers' information.
{marker}The Federal Communications Commission issued a press release stating that hacker group LizardSquad was responsible for the attack, in which the cybercriminals tricked Cox customers into providing account credentials.
{marker}Despite being the victim, the FCC blames Cox for the data breach, since it failed to require sufficient security.
Cox could have instituted two-factor authentication, according to Krebs, but better yet, the communications company should have encrypted all sensitive data.
{marker}That way, even if passwords were stolen, data would remain obscured to those unauthorized to access it.
CloudMask, a data-centric cybersecurity solution, would be the best bet in this situation, as it acts as the data's last line of defense.
With CloudMask, infrastructure breaches no longer mean data breaches. Insecure clouds and mobile devices no longer mean insecure enterprise data. And an insider with access to applications and systems can no longer see data.
