Malicious software affecting the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) payroll computers has been discovered in the wake of last month’s cyber attack, the association has revealed.

The attack took place during the June Bank Holiday weekend and a subsequent investigation found malware on the FAI’s payroll server.

In a statement released late last night, the association said that it has written to all staff and former staff to update them on the cyber attack and to reassure them that none of their data was extracted from the system.

Forensic computer experts informed the FAI that other critical services such as the FAINET system, which handles all player registration details, were not affected in any way.

‘The FAI has treated this matter very seriously and are focused on closing out this incident and preventing any further security incidents,’ the statement read.

‘The association assures customers that no breach of payment details took place as such data is stored off-site.’

The FAI said it has notified the Office of the Data Protection Commission and the Gardaí about the incident.

It is understood that the hack also left many staff unable to send or receive messages for 24 hours
