STEUBENVILLE — Eastern Gateway Community College will receive $914,000 in federal funding for electric vehicle technology training, including installation of equipment and technology.

The funding was included in a comprehensive government funding package passed by Congress, and was part of $19 million in directed spending for projects in U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan’s 13th District.

“The Mahoning Valley is fast becoming the Voltage Valley. We have an opportunity to be world leaders in electric vehicle technology. Eastern Gateway is ready to train the workers who will build and install the technology and the parts to equip electric vehicles. We thank Ryan for seeing the future and we can’t wait to prepare our students to take the next step in their careers in electric vehicle technology and equipment,” said Michael Geoghegan, Eastern Gateway Community College president.

“We have been working with industry leaders like Ultium Cells and will soon be working with Foxconn in 2023. With this grant, we are poised to continue to be a leader in training in the electric vehicle space.” said Arthur E. Daly, Eastern Gateway senior vice president and chief development officer. “We have a unique mission with a unique student body at Eastern Gateway. The average age of an Eastern Gateway student is 33 years old. Many are for the first time fulfilling the dream of going to college, and we offer them an opportunity to graduate with a college degree, debt-free.”

In a press release announcing the funding and the 19 projects, U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan said: “This latest government funding package again makes historic investments to re-build our region through funding to our schools, recreation centers, law enforcement agencies, health care institutions, manufacturers and more. I’m proud to have fought to provide another $19 million injection into our economy and for countless other wins that will bolster our region,” Ryan said in a press release.

Eastern Gateway is a state, public, accredited institution of higher learning established in 1968 dedicated to providing a debt-free, college degree to students from Columbiana, Jefferson, Mahoning and Trumbull counties, across Ohio and other locations.
