Disney introduces new technology to ‘unlock all kinds of magical moments’

Disney guests will have two new technological gadgets to help them interact, experience and explore the magic.

MagicBands, the bracelets introduced in 2013, are getting an upgrade. MagicBand+ will include all the hands-free conveniences of the original – park and guest room entry as well as paying capabilities – along with new interactive options.

Once guests enter the theme park, MagicBand+ comes to life. It will light up, change colors, vibrate and even recognize some movement the guest does all to enhance the storytelling in the parks.

"The combination of all of those capabilities is going to unlock all kinds of magical moments for you all across Walt Disney World Resort," said Dan Soto, Vice President of Technology and Digital.

Guests will be able to take part in interactive experiences, from finding virtual bounties throughout Black Spire Outpost in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios to seeing their bands light up in unison with the new night shows at Epcot, "Harmonious," and Magic Kingdom, "Disney Enchantment."

Parkgoers can have their MagicBand+ interact with the "Disney Fab 50 Character Collection," the golden sculptures spread throughout the Walt Disney World theme parks.

The face of the next generation wearable is slightly larger than the original, but it is just as lightweight. When the product launches sometime in 2022, there will be about two dozen design options to select from including classic characters, Princess or Star Wars-themed and even a simple one-color option.

"As you can imagine, similar to what we have with the MagicBand today, we will quickly expand to include all your favorite characters and moments," Soto said. "There will be something for everyone."

MagicBands start at $20 and go up for specialty ones. The cost of the MagicBand+ hasn’t been announced yet, but the company said there will be a discounted price for Disney Resort hotel guests, as well as new and renewing Walt Disney World Annual Passholders.

Guests who have stocked up on MagicBands, no need to worry just yet. They will still be useable for the foreseeable future.

No word yet when the MagicBand+ will roll out in other Disney parks.
