The October 21, 2016 Dyn cyberattack was a massive DDOS attack that took place in three waves. The recently released source code for the malware Mirai was used to create a botnet army that exploited the security weaknesses of internet connected devices like printers, cameras, baby monitors and more pieces of the IOT. (Internet of Things)
While groups have taken credit for the outage the exact perpetrators and their motives are still speculative. Flashpoint Intel has stated they are moderately confident the attacks were the work of “script kiddies” or amateur hacking enthusiasts.
