Technology executives in a recent CIO Journal end-of-year survey shared their priorities for 2023. While recruiting and retaining talent and leading through a tightening economy topped many to-dos, the long tail of priorities encompassed everything from cybersecurity to sustainability.

Below are edited highlights of CIO responses on one priority: Modernization.

As businesses continued to modernize their enterprise technology in 2022, cloud-computing was as popular a choice as ever—and driving big wins for cloud services providers like

Amazon.com Inc.’s

Amazon Web Services,

Microsoft Corp.’s

Azure, and

Alphabet Inc.’s

Google Cloud.

For chief information officers, the oft-given advice is that adoption of the cloud isn’t a destination, it’s a journey. That means updating corporate systems, databases, and applications can be a yearslong process for IT leaders.

Lori Beer,

the CIO of JPMorgan Chase & Co., said one of her technology priorities in 2023 is to continue speeding up the bank’s adoption of cloud-computing, which she considers crucial for its overall modernization efforts, and its ability to make use of artificial intelligence.

“We have been on this journey for years, preparing our applications and data to move to the cloud and modernizing our infrastructure,” Ms. Beer said. “And this year we are doubling down to maximize the potential of our [over] 500 petabytes of data.”

Fannie Mae,

CIO Ramon Richards said one of his 2023 technology priorities includes continued cloud adoption.

“We’ve built a strong foundation and are reaching maturity on many aspects of our digital transformation, which allows us to allocate more capacity to deliver on Fannie Mae business priorities next year,” Mr. Richards said.

David Vidoni, vice president of information technology at

Pegasystems Inc.,

said the top technology priority in 2023 is to continue modernizing its business systems. For example, he said the software maker is consolidating its data platforms onto a single, modernized platform.

“It’s a natural time to find and eliminate any inefficiencies that may have accumulated,” Mr. Vidoni said. “But at the same time, it’s not just about cutting back—we’re also planning to double down on smart investments that help further modernize how we operate the business.”
