Chula Vista looking for experts to join new task force on technology and privacy
Chula Vista is looking for individuals with expertise in technology and data privacy to join a new task force that will help create a citywide technology oversight policy.
The city released its preferred qualifications for members and laid out the group’s responsibilities. Those interested have until March 4 to apply.
Dubbed the Technology and Privacy Advisory Task Force, members “will study city technology, work with key stakeholders in the community, and develop informed policy recommendations designed to help the city protect individual privacy and enhance technology oversight while also delivering excellent public service,” read the city’s news release.
City staff and experts are expected to present the task force with information on how Chula Vista and other cities are using technology, existing laws regulating privacy, digital equity, bias and information security, the city said. By the fall of this year, the group is expected to have developed a policy recommendation for the City Council.
Taskforce members must be Chula Vista residents or reside within the San Diego region and have expertise or experience in one of the following: digital privacy, emerging technologies, data management and information security, community equity and local government.
The city also prefers that applicants have previous experience serving on an advisory board or other similar bodies.
Its search for applicants comes after the City Council hired public relations firm Madaffer Enterprises, Inc. to help the city establish the task force.
The task force is separate from a new police advisory board the city is also looking to establish. The board would review police programs and data, such as from the automated license plate reader program. Both, however, are a result of concerns raised by the public and the Chula Vista Human Relations Commission on the need for a city oversight policy and an expert board to vet such data.
Interviews and selection of task force members will take place in March. The applications will be reviewed by city staff and recommended to the city manager for selection. Meetings will be held publicly, with their first one scheduled in early April.
