China Reportedly Forcing Tourists to Install Surveillance App on Phones Multiple reports have found that tourists
crossing certain borders in China are having
their data forcibly seized by authorities. Chinese border guards are installing malware
on tourist’s phones that collects calendar entries,
phone contacts, call logs and text messages. The malware is not hidden, but
rather appears on the user’s home
screen as a standard application icon. According to a Maya Wang, a senior researcher
at Human Rights Watch, this application is an
example of “pervasive mass surveillance.” Maya Wang, via 'Vice' Authorities are believed to be looking
for files that contain Islamic extremist
content or Islamic material in general. The increased surveillance is reportedly tied
to a current campaign against the Muslim
population in the Xinjiang region of China.
