Dr. David Brumley is CEO and co-founder of ForAllSecure, and a full professor at Carnegie Mellon University in CS and ECE. Dr. Brumley received his PhD in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University, MS in Computer Science from Stanford University, and a BA in Mathematics from the University of Northern Colorado. Dr. Brumley previously was the Director of CyLab, the CMU Security and Privacy Institute.
Brumley's honors include a United States Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) from President Obama, a Sloan Foundation award, a Carnegie
Science Award, 4 patents, and numerous best paper awards from tier-1 peer reviewed publication venues.
Dr. Brumley is also advisor and a founding member of PPP, one of the world's most elite competitive hacking teams. PPP is currently ranked #1 in the US, has won the most DEFCON “Capture the Flag” hacking challenges of any team, as well as other NSA and DoD competitions. Dr. Brumley also runs picoctf.com, a high school hacking competition used by over 65,000 people that is designed to promote computer security as a career choice.
ForAllSecure technology Mayhem is the result of over 15 years of research at CMU and 4 patents. In 2016 DARPA -- the organization credited with inventing the internet -- ran a Cyber Grand Challenge to identify the world’s best technology for finding and mitigating exploitable bugs. Mayhem won the challenge, and was on display at the US Smithsonian museum.
After DARPA’s Cyber Grand Challenge, Brumley quickly set to work scaling Mayhem, the technology from ForAllSecure, from a proof-of-concept to an enterprise product at scale. In 2017 the company partnered with Defense Innovation Unit, a progressive group within the Department of Defense.
Brumley is passionate about his vision: to create technology that will autonomously check and protect the world’s software. He believes that humans are at their best when they’re given the space to be creative. By automating boring, time-consuming tasks with autonomous technology engineers will be free to creatively tackle new challenges. The underlying goal of Mayhem is to elevate human potential.
