Apple delivers iOS fix for major vulnerability in Mail app

Apple has released software updates for iPhones and iPads designed to patch a major flaw in Apple's Mail app that recently prompted security experts to advise users to urgently switch to alternative email apps.

If you're using an Apple device, you should have already received a notification that an update is available, meaning all you have to do is tap "install now”.

If you haven't yet gotten the notification, plug in your charger, make sure the WiFi is on and then go to "Settings/General/Software update" and hit "download and install”.

Once updated, your device should be running securely on iOS version 13.5 or 12.4.7, fixing the Mail app vulnerability.

Until the release of this update, security experts have been warning people to use alternative email apps, after vulnerabilities in Apple's own Mail app were discovered by the security company Zecop.

The flaws, which security experts say have been part of Apple's mobile operating system for years, enable hackers to gain access to iPhones or iPads simply by sending a certain kind of email.

Once they had access, the hacker would be able to read, modify and delete your emails, among other things. Apple said it had seen no evidence that the vulnerabilities have been exploited to harm users and that there was no "immediate risk" to users. – dpa
