New services are coming to Alief, including a re-opened library. The Alief-David Henington Regional Library will open on Saturday after its previous library had been closed since October.

Julie Mintzer is Deputy Assistant Director of Communications with the Houston Public Library. She said there will be several new features for the community to look forward to.

“We do have this fantastic TechLink facility,” she said. “We have a music studio and a green screen, so that people who may want to come out and make their own podcast or record some music or make some videos for TikToks.”

Other services will include 3D printing, passport services and tutoring classes.

The library, which will be open Monday through Saturday, will be located in what the city calls the Alief Neighborhood Center, which will also have a space for the Houston Health and Parks Department to operate. The center will include a WIC office, basketball courts, a walking track and pickleball courts.

Brent Taylor is the Deputy Press Secretary for the mayor. He said the Neighborhood Center has been 20 years in the making.

“There have been conversations going on about this space for literal decades at this point,” Taylor said. “And having the Houston Health Department facilities, there was a natural inclusion of this idea of creating a cohesive space that remains accessible to all of the residents in Alief.”
