UEFA Launches RFPs for Technology, Data Gathering, TV Graphics, More

The Washington Nationals, known in the past for being low-tech and neutral on analytics, are upgrading their organizational staff to include biomechanics experts and an assistant director of player development specializing in technology.

The team’s impetus, in part, is to assimilate better to its recent implementation of Hawk-Eye technology. Late this past summer, the franchise installed Hawk-Eye’s camera-vision and tracking system at Nationals Park and at its minor league ballparks in Rochester, Harrisburg, Wilmington, Fredericksburg and West Palm Beach.

According to the Washington Post, the Nationals were concerned about the volume of incoming Hawk-Eye biomechanical data and whether the front office had enough staff or knowledge to process and then apply the analytics. Even though owner Ted Lerner has put the franchise up for sale, the team’s overhaul began over a year ago when they hired David Longley to be director of player development technology and strategy.

At the time, the Nationals were considered to have the tiniest player development staff in baseball, but the new pending hires will modernize the organization at a time Lerner is trying to entice people to buy the club. Specifically, according to the Washington Post, the new jobs on the major league staff will be a biomechanics expert helping pitchers, and two baseball system engineers, two analysts and a web developer to help with R&D.

On the player development front, the team intends to hire an assistant director of player development technology and strategy to work with Longley, as well as biomechanics experts for pitchers and hitters, an assistant strength and conditioning coordinator, two clubhouse assistants and West Palm Beah and five performance associates at each of their affiliates in Rochester, Harrisburg, Wilmington, Fredericksburg and West Palm Beach.
