Playtonic Games announced a new Yooka-Laylee game on Friday, Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, which does away with the 3D platformer adventure style of the original for something more 2D. The new Yooka-Laylee game combines 2.5D side-scrolling platforming with top-down puzzle-solving in overworld areas.

Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair’s reveal trailer promises levels filled with secrets, surprise, puzzles, and challenges, as well as new music from composers David Wise and Grant Kirkhope. Here’s the game’s official description:

In this new platforming adventure hybrid, Yooka and Laylee must combine their abilities to take on a series of challenging and vibrant 2.5D levels and explore and solve puzzles in a beautiful 3D overworld. It’s on them to rescue Queen Phoebee’s Royal Beettalion Guard from each level, as they size up Capital B’s most dastardly challenge yet — the Impossible Lair.

Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair is coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC via Steam, and Xbox One sometime in 2019. Publisher Team17 and Playtonic say the game will get a physical release on consoles.

The original Yooka-Laylee was released in 2017. We liked the game’s charm and humor, but found its mechanics a little too dated. The game also drew criticism for its wonky 3D camera, something that shouldn’t be an issue in Impossible Lair.
