Yahoo data breach settlement: You may be eligible for up to $358
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- After multiple massive data breaches occurred at Yahoo from 2012 to 2016, a settlement could mean payouts to millions of customers.
A settlement proposed in the California courts would mean a $117.5 million settlement fund would be paid out to customers affected by the breach who may have had their personal information -- like names, email addresses and passwords -- stolen.
Yahoo users are eligible under the settlement if:
- You had a Yahoo account between Jan. 1, 2012 and Dec. 31, 2016.
- You were sent a notice concerning the data breaches announced in 2016 and/or 2017.
- You had Yahoo accounts that included traditional email accounts, as well as accounts on other sites that were owned or operated by Yahoo during this time period, including Yahoo Fantasy Sports, Yahoo Finance, Tumblr and Flickr.
- You are a resident of the United States or Israel.
If you’re not sure if you’re eligible, you can go to the settlement website or call the settlement administrator toll free number at 844-702-2788.
Here is what you may receive under the settlement:
- At least two years of free credit monitoring services.
- If you already have a credit monitoring service you expect to keep for at least a year, you can submit a claim for a cash payment of $100.
- Cash payments can increase to as much as $358 per filer, but could also decreased depending on the number of claims.
- If you have documentation of out-of-pocket losses related to the breaches, you can make a claim for reimbursement of up to $25,000.
Eligible users can submit claims at Yahoodatabreachsettlement.com. The deadline for filing a claim is July 20, 2020. The final hearing on the settlement will be held in April 2020, and any payments will begin after the final hearing.
