Whole Foods opens Sherman Oaks market with ‘Just Walk Out’ technology – Press Enterprise
Whole Foods Market opened a new store in Sherman Oaks on Wednesday, March 16 featuring “Just Walk Out” technology.
It’s the second Whole Foods that has opened this year with the Amazon technology, which allows shoppers to gather the foods they need and leave without going through a crowded checkout line or self-serve kiosk.
The other Just Walk Out location is in Washington, D.C.
To skip the checkout, customers can enter the store in three ways — by scanning the QR code in the Whole Foods Market or Amazon app, inserting a credit or debit card linked to their Amazon account, or hovering their palm over an electronic reader using Amazon One.
If customers prefer, they can shop using self-checkout lanes or check out at the customer service booth staffed by Whole Foods workers.
The 9,100-square-foot market at 12905 Riverside Dr. in Sherman Oaks offers an array of organic and conventional foods, with some items sourced from local farms, including apples from Cuyama Orchards, sweet potatoes from Valpredo Farms and orchids from Formosa Pacific Orchids.
The store also features smoothies, fresh juices and acai bowls in addition to a variety of coffee and espresso drinks.
Other features include a full-service seafood counter, a prepared foods section with a deli, a specialty department with wine and cheeses, a bakery and a wellness section with a variety of skin care and body care products.
Amazon spent more than $13 billion to buy the Whole Foods supermarket chain in 2017. Amazon operates its own chain of Amazon Fresh stores that also use Just Walk Out technology. Locally, they can be found in such communities as Cerritos, La Habra and Moorpark.
