Where is the BBC resurrecting WWII-era broadcasting technology?

In response to coverage of the invasion of Ukraine, Russia recently blocked access to the BBC’s websites within its borders. The broadcasting company is responding by resurrecting communications technology circa World War II.

The BBC has announced it will use shortwave radio to deliver broadcasts in Russia. These frequencies can travel over long distances and are received by portable sets. The technology has a long history of wartime use — it was used to spread propaganda during World War II and experienced peak popularity during the Cold War. It was last used by BBC World Service in Europe in 2008.

The broadcasts will be available on frequencies of 15,735 kHz from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and 5,875 kHz from midnight to 2 a.m. Ukraine time.
