In our second video in the “Demystifying Data Security” series we talk about Ransomware. What is Ransomware and how can you protect your business in the event you are targeted?

Ransomware attacks happy when a piece of malicious software, known as malware, installs itself on your computer or network and locks all of your files so you cannot use them. Then a screen pops up asking you to usually call a number or click a link to pay a ransom in order to unlock your data.

Many ransomware infections stem from phishing attacks, where cybercriminals target particular users or business with emails that appear to be from someone you know but contain a malicious attachment. When downloaded the attachment then installs the malware onto your system and attempts to ransom you and your company for access again.

Ransomware is one of the main causes of small business data loss, so it is important to educate yourself and your employees, to identify phishing attempts and how to protect your business.

One way to protect your business from ransomware is to be sure and always back up your critical data. This way you can go back to a previous version of your data prior to when the Ransomware attack occurred.
