‘West Side Story’ Remake Adds Newcomer As Maria

Steven Spielberg’s upcoming adaptation of “West Side Story” has cast its lead actors. TheWrap reports 17-year-old newcomer Rachel Zegler will play Maria opposite Ansel Elgort as Tony. Zegler is one of four Latinx actors who will play key members of the Sharks Tony winner David Alvarez will play Maria’s brother Bernardo, Tony nominee Ariana DeBose will play Anita, and Josh Andres Rivera will play Chino.
Alvarez won a Tony in 2009 for playing the lead role in “Billy Elliot: The Musical.
