Northeastern Junior College has asked the public for help in identifying those involved in the theft of equipment from the welding lab at the Applied Technology Campus overnight Wednesday.

According to Sterling Police Chief Tyson Kerr, the theft was reported Thursday morning shortly before 8 a.m. While the initial report was that it happened after 5 p.m. Wednesday, investigators were able to review security camera footage and place the time of the theft at 3:01 a.m. Thursday.

Kerr said the thieves cut a fence at the property and rolled it back to get access to the engine-generated welder. The welder, valued at about $10,000, was the only item taken.

Because of the distance from the scene, the security camera’s footage was not sufficient quality to determine the number of suspects, gender or other descriptions.

“We are working a few potential leads based on the vehicle descriptions; however, the camera was too far to get a license plate or any other detail,” Kerr said.

According to Jason Hill, director of the Welding Technology program at NJC, the two vehicles that appear to be involved are a black SUV, believed to a Toyota 4-runner with a roof rack and tow hitch, and a white sedan that could be a Pontiac or Chevy Impala.

The incident remains under investigation, Kerr said.

Anyone with information about the theft is asked to contact the Sterling Police Department at 970-522-3512.
