00:02: (Chris Patterson, Radio Systems Manager – Waukesha County) Just look at recent headlines that the damage that cyber attacks have done to industry, banking, and government. We take that extremely seriously. Recent years, Waukesha County has spent literally millions of dollars to enhance and protect our radio network security. Cyber attacks are new, they’re evolving, they’re dynamic. With the advent of the P25 Simulcast System, everything being IP-based, there’s a lot more threat, there’s a lot more to be concerned about. We don’t, and I don’t know of any government agency, that has the resources to review patches and security updates of not only the system itself, but other software used with the system. When you consider what’s at stake, in our case, yes we do have highway maintenance and parks and sewer, but it’s also police, fire, EMS. Everything is at stake. SUS gives us that ability that piece of mind knowing that we have Motorola and the engineers who designed the system actively evaluating everything and looking at threats actively and making those changes without our active intervention is really important.

01:06: (Gary Bell, Director of Emergency Preparedness – Waukesha County) We look at the Waukesha County and Milwaukee County partnership, the oasis regional radio system, multiple different agencies with multiple different IT professionals are responsible for making those updates. One little gap or one little opening from a patch update can cause significant issues.

01:23: (Steve Milner, Radio Systems Specialist – Waukesha County) Patching is transparent right now, it is handled through Motorola, we have a subscription. Anything that happens in the background that does not cause us any problems, at that point we’re betting a thousand.

01:34: (Gary Bell, Director of Emergency Preparedness – Waukesha County) All these updates are all being done in the lab side before they get pushed out into the production environment. We see that as a value add to the entire system. Just knowing there are individuals out there dedicated to watching the system, have a baseline for what normal traffic is and can see when the spikes occur to take action definitely allows me to relax a little bit, focus on the things I need to focus on, which is our people rather than technologies.

COMPLEXITY MANAGED. CALM PREVAILS.
