New Graduate Program Created to Help Build Cybersecurity Workforce

TYLER (October 5, 2022) – The University of Texas at Tyler announced that it is now accepting  students for the new Master of Science degree in cybersecurity and data analytics program  designed to help address the shortage of cybersecurity professionals regionally and beyond.  Inaugural classes will begin spring 2023.

The fully online program is open to baccalaureate graduates of all majors and working professionals  of all occupations.

The curriculum will offer students the most current knowledge and skills for strengthening  cybersecurity protocols, developing cyber-secure control systems, and analyzing and  interpreting vast amounts of data. Students can complete the degree in just one year, beginning  with foundational courses and advancing to specialized studies. They may choose from several  electives with stackable certifications in such areas as cyber data foundation, applied cybersecurity and applied data analytics.

“More and more professionals are needed around the world to protect companies and businesses  from growing cybersecurity threats,” said Krist Swimberghe, DBA, Soules College of Business dean.  “The Soules College of Business is proud to be a leader in providing students this vital education to  become qualified professionals who will be more than ready to help meet this critical need.”

The UT Tyler graduate degree is the first in Texas and among the first nationwide to combine the  disciplines of cybersecurity and data analytics – two critical components in keeping valuable data  secure.

“We believe this program will provide an immediate national impact and provide students with  skills in two of the most critical areas – cybersecurity and data analytics,” said Robert Schumaker,  PhD, professor of computer science and co-departmental coordinator for the program. “Students  who complete the program will be in high demand.”
