0UnityPoint Health – Central Illinois implements technology to help patients detect and treat lung cancer earlier
PEORIA (25 NEWS) - Minimally-invasive lung cancer screenings are now available at UnityPoint Health - Central Illinois.
The hospital system is the first in the region to use the lon endoluminal system, a robotic-assisted platform for lung biopsies.
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths, but according to a news release, the average 5-year survival rate is 92% when diagnosed at the earliest stage.
“We are proud to invest in this life-enhancing technology to provide better cancer care solutions,” says Dr. Pooja Gupta, Pulmonologist at UnityPoint Health. “The Ion system helps us with the difficult early-stage diagnosis of lung cancer, which helps us provide better outcomes for our patients.”
Lon enables physicians to obtain tissue samples from deep within the lung, addressing a challenging aspect of lung biopsy.
It may also help patients avoid subsequent biopsies by helping enable a diagnosis through the samples obtained.
