LEESBURG — While the investigation continues into the "cybersecurity event" that affected UF Health Central Florida's computer servers on May 31, the organization has made progress in its system restoration efforts.

UF Health officials announced that its electronic medical record system was successfully restored on Friday morning, representing a "major milestone" in the organization's journey toward regular network operations.

"Significant progress has been made in the overall system restoration effort, including successful reintegration of a number of key clinical applications," a UF Health statement said.

UF Health Central Florida encompasses its hospitals in both Leesburg and The Villages.

UF Health experts detected unusual activity on the night of the incident, leading the organization to initiate protective measures — including disconnecting its clinical application network from the organization's servers and relying on paper documentation in its hospitals and physician clinics.

It is still unknown whether or not it was a ransomware attack.

Over the past few weeks, IT teams from UF Health’s Central Florida, Gainesville and Jacksonville campuses have worked with outside consultants to investigate the cause of the event and restore all computer systems as quickly as possible.

"Our investigation is ongoing and, as is typical in such situations, we expect it will take some time to determine exactly what happened," UF Health said. "We will provide as much information as possible as the investigation progresses, bearing in mind that security, privacy and law enforcement considerations may impact the amount of detail we can provide."
