UCF cybersecurity team wins fifth national title
UCF's football and basketball team may not have won the national championship, but the cyber security team did. "Our team did really well. I mean everyone is super talented but everyone was mostly new to the competition," said Aidan Durand, UCF cybersecurity team champion.The team of eight students has been competing all year long against 171 teams nationwide, including schools like Harvard who even called UCF for advice. "I consider it an honor to be thought of that way that we have Ivy League schools calling asking for help," faculty advisor/coach Tom Nederost said.Recently, it all boiled down to a big showdown in Texas. The teams managed a system of 40 computers, eight hours a day for two days straight. "It's a lot of stress. There's a lot of stuff we have to do and there's only eight of us," Durand said.At the competition, the team got a fictitious company, a gaming company. Fake customers started calling in the meantime. People who work do cyber security for a living, professionals, started hacking the system. And they won! They could handle the fake customers, fake managers and prevent cyber hacks."That's a big part of the competition, learning how to communicate. The time management to make sure you get all your tasks done on time," Harrison Keating, a UCF cybersecurity team champion, said.In light of what's happening in the world, should we put UCF's cyber security team on the next plane to Washington? Don't bother. "When we were at the competition, there were a ton of recruiters from the CIA. The NSA to try to recruit people as soon as they can," Durand said.So move over everyone, the future for UCF's cyber security team is so bright, they have to wear shades.
