Tulsa's crime rate is one of the highest in the state, but Mayor G.T. Bynum hopes to make the city safer.

He is planning a trip to Nevada to look into a piece of new technology that's showing promise for Las Vegas police officers.

Mayor Bynum said he will visit Nevada at the end of February, along with Police Chief Wendall Franklin and a few Tulsa city councilors.

The purpose of the visit, according to the mayor, is to look at Las Vegas's Real Time Information Center.

It's new technology that the federal government said helps officers quickly respond to crimes in progress or crimes that already happened.

The technology is also meant to give officers better operational intelligence.

Las Vegas is one of several U.S. cities utilizing a Real Time Information Center.

Mayor Bynum said the technology has led to a huge reduction in crime.

"It's where you have cameras stationed in high-crime areas throughout your city. And they all feed back to a central location where the police department can monitor things as they're occuring and relay information to officers in the field," said Mayor Bynum.

Bynum added that the upcoming trip is to look at the technology and see if it could be implemented in Tulsa.

The mayor said the federal government has been a big proponent of this technology.
