Timelapse: PSAC II, New York, Overall View (1 of 2)

Set on a 9-acre plot of land in the Bronx, New York, Public Safety Answering Center II (PSAC II) is an emergency call center that augments New York City’s 911 services.

Designed to operate continually under adverse conditions and provide redundancy to the New York City's primary call center, the facility will strengthen the city’s ability to maintain communication in the event of a natural disaster or large-scale emergency.

The 450,000-square-foot, blast-resistant structure is a perfect cube, with minimal windows due to security concerns. To mitigate its monolithic appearance, the windows dotting the building’s facade are set within panels of recycled aluminum, bringing a dynamic, asymmetrical rhythm to the surface.

A sculptural berm of wild grasses surrounds and helps protect the center, without being oppressively defensive. PSAC II is designed to achieve LEED® Gold certification.
