Ticket sales begin next week for Loving Lakewood: All-Stars fundraiser: A Place in the Sun

LAKEWOOD, Ohio -- It may be wintertime, but LakewoodAlive will be looking forward to baseball season -- and other sports -- at its “Loving Lakewood: All-Stars” event from 7:30 to 11 p.m. Feb. 22 at Lakewood Masonic Temple, 15300 Detroit Ave., Lakewood.

LakewoodAlive is a community-centered, nonprofit organization that seeks to foster and sustain vibrant neighborhoods in the city.

Attendees at the winter fundraiser are encouraged to wear their favorite sports jersey to the event, which will celebrate the community. The Masonic Temple will be transformed into an arena-like venue for the sports-themed fundraiser.

VIP and general admission tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Jan. 7.

Proceeds will support LakewoodAlive’s programming, which includes administering a housing outreach program; hosting large-scale community events, including the Lakewood Summer Meltdown, Spooky Pooch Parade, Light Up Lakewood and the Chocolate Walk; operating a Main Street program in downtown Lakewood; and pursuing community development initiatives. The nonprofit also presents the popular Knowing Your Home educational workshops.

Recycle lights: Unwanted, broken and/or burned-out strings of holiday lights can be recycled at Fairview Park City Hall, 20777 Lorain Road, Fairview Park, through Jan. 11. Electrical cords and power strips also will be accepted.

Items to be recycled should be placed in the green recycling containers -- which are accessible 24/7 -- in the City Hall parking lot.

Changing of the guard: The new year brings new leadership at the Community West Foundation.

Congratulations to Lakewood resident David Dombrowiak, who led the nonprofit as its president and CEO for more than two decades. He announced his retirement in late 2019 and stepped down at the end of the year. He is now a life trustee and president emeritus.

New president and CEO is Martin Uhle.

The local philanthropic organization is dedicated to supporting organizations that provide the basic needs of food, clothing, shelter and medical care to the most needy in and around western Cuyahoga County.

Computer safety: The Northeast Ohio Personal Computers group will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 8 at Westlake Porter Public Library, 27333 Center Ridge Road, Westlake.

John Dolinar will speak on “Personal Home Computer Security.” He will discuss using and maintaining security software on home computers to protect owners from those seeking to compromise their personal information or to damage their computers.

Dolinar has more than 30 years of IT experience, including programming, network support and configuration, information security and project management.

Refreshments and networking begin at 6:30, with the meeting at 7. All are welcome.

At the library: Here’s a look at what’s happening at the North Olmsted Branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library during the coming week. The library is at 27403 Lorain Road, North Olmsted. Visit cuyahogalibrary.org/Branches/North-Olmsted.aspx for more information.

- Families are invited to enjoy a miniature golf course at the library from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday (Jan. 4).

- The library invites those interested to play the popular card game “Magic: The Gathering” from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 4). There will be one-on-one games, a two-headed giant and a free-for-all session. The casual gathering is for all ages and skill levels; however, library officials said the game may not be suitable for children younger than 10.

- There will be a Minecraft meet-up from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Jan. 6 at the library, complete with Minecraft competitions and free refreshments.

- Learn about the birds of Northeast Ohio from 7 to 8 p.m. Jan. 8 at the library. More than 200 species of birds can be found in Northeast Ohio during a typical year, with some being year-round residents; others pass through on their way to the Boreal Forests of Canada. Still others fly nonstop across the Gulf of Mexico to build nests, lay and hatch eggs here.

The program will offer a closeup look at 100 of the most common residents, migrants and breeding birds of Northeast Ohio, as well as where and when to find them.
