What Are They Getting Ready For?!?!
Another ransomware attack, similar to last month’s WannaCry Ransomware attack, is rapidly spreading across Europe and worldwide…
Known as "GoldenEye" or “Petya,” this cyberattack has now caused serious disruption at large firms: including the advertising giant WPP; French construction materials company Saint-Gobain; and Russian steel and oil firms Evraz and Rosneft. So far the ransomware attack appears to have affected over 80 companies in Ukraine, France, Russia, England, India, U.K., and even the U.S.
And, after a number of Ukrainian banks were hit by the attack, Anton Gerashchenko, an aide to the Interior Ministry, called the attack “the biggest in Ukraine’s history.”
To make matters worse, there were also reports of internet outages nationwide in America via CenturyLink, and even a nationwide banking glitch affecting the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) and Banco De Oro (BDO) in The Philippines, due to “internal error.”
But this isn’t the first time where such a massive cyberattack has occurred. There was also the WannaCry ransomware program incident last month — wherein an unprecedented ‘‘ransomware’’ cyber attack struck tens of thousands of victims in 150 countries.
Per WannaCry, organizations affected and/or involved include the FedEx (U.S.), National Health Service hospitals in the UK, Nissan Motor Manufacturing UK in Tyne and Wear, Renault, Russia's Ministry of Internal Affairs, Russian Railways and MegaFon, Romania's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Telenor Hungary, German railway company Deutsche Bahn, Telefónica and several other large companies in Spain, several parts of the European Union, Brazil's São Paulo Court of Justice and Vivo, China's PetroChina and Public Security Bureaus, India's Andhra Pradesh Police, Indonesia's Dharmais and Harapan Kita hospital, and many others.
Considering this isn’t the first time (or first “test” should I say) these types of cyberattacks, ATM glitches, bank glitches, and tech glitches have occurred — the question still remains: What Are They REALLY Preparing Us For?!?!
